In comparison to established countries, there is a big deficit in real estate research in Africa. AfRER’s aims are to transfer knowledge and experience and to adapt them to the special conditions in African countries. The focus lies on the improvement of market transparency, the development of proper investment and finance vehicles and the introduction of the concept of sustainable buildings.

Research
The African Real Estate Research Competence Center (AfRER) is directed by Prof. Dr. Karl-Werner Schulte HonRICS, a retired Professor of Real Estate, and Dr. Moses Kusiluka, BEOS Visiting Professor for African Real Estate. BEOS develops and manages mixed-use industrial properties that serve as office, production, services and logistic sites.
Visiting Fellows are Dr. Sophia Kongela and Dr. Jonas Hahn. The AfRER Team is accomplished by
- African doctoral students and PhD graduates
- German doctoral students with Africa-related topics
- IREBS students who write or have written a Master or Bachelor Thesis on Africa-related topics
who contribute to the research.
The African doctoral students receive scholarships from DAAD Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (German Academic Exchange Service). The team also engages in real estate education, to establish student exchange between IREBS and real estate departments at universities in Africa.
Education
The team also engages in real estate education and tries to establish student exchange between IREBS and real estate departments at universities in Africa and inform our IREBS students on real estate markets and investment opportunities in Africa. The education results are twofold.
A partnership agreement between SRES at Ardhi University, Dar es Salaam, and IREBS at Regensburg University is already in place. Several IREBS students spend or have spent one semester at Ardhi University and we wait for African students to arrive. In addition, Dr. Moses Kusiluka and Dr. Sophia Kongela did their PhD research at IREBS in Regensburg.
AfRER has organized the seminar “Doing Real Estate Business in Africa” for IREBS students of the “Master of Science in Real Estate” programme in the 2013/2014 winter term. This seminar was the first ever offered at a university outside Africa. The main focus was on the countries Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Mozambique and Tanzania. Since then, the seminar runs every second year. In between, an “African Real Estate Day” with great speakers takes places. The seminar has run in the winter terms.
